Rütliwiese

The Cradle of the Confederation

The Rütliwiese is an iconic place and closely linked to the founding history of Switzerland. In 1291 the Confederation of Confederates was sworn and certified on the Rütli meadow. The cornerstone for today's modern Switzerland was thus laid in this important place and a big celebration on the national holiday commemorates the "Rütli Oath" more than 700 years ago. The federal letter sealed at that time is still in good condition and is on display in the federal letter archive in Schwyz.

The Rütliwiese can be easily reached from Vitznau by regularly scheduled boats. The excursion can be easily combined with a hike on the Swiss Path or with a tour on a nostalgic steamship on Lake Uri.
